Sadaf Tabibzadeh English 6 Professor Dossett 10.02.2015 Contraries in Frankenstein Most people would think that contraries only exist to dominate each other, making the other side appear less significant. However, the opposite of this is true. The beauty of a rose stands out more because of the thorns that it contains. Without the thorns, it would just be an average flower. A day wouldn’t be as bright if it wasn’t compared to the darkness of night. And â€Å"joy wouldn’t be so joyful, if it wasn’t for pain† (50 cent). Contrasts highlight movements in an element, by pointing out the differences that are shown by the opposite side. They in fact, bring out the good and bad features in anything. William Blake is known for his famous quote, â€Å"Without contraries there is no progression.† He continues to show contraries in many of his works, including â€Å"Marriage of Heaven and Hell†, and his poem written in 1794, â€Å"The Sick Rose,† Blake introduces the idea of contraries that are layered in the simplicity of these lines. At first, to the reader, it may only seem that he is writing about a simple dying rose, however there is more to it. He is also mentioning how this is benefiting the worm that decides to reside in it. The best interpretation that comes to mind, is the loss of virginity. The rose symbolizes a virgin, pure and untampered (a vagina). The â€Å"invisible worm† symbolizes the possibility of penetration (penis). Introduction: Throughout the 1920s through the 1950s Women’s clothing in America was affected by World War II, which lead to the exploration of different styles, the encounter of new trends and the exchange of ideas and new styles. Historical Context: In the 1920s there were many events that happened but one of the main events was the 1920s bathing suit arrest. There were multiple arrest made for the look, but no names were giving. The rule for bathing suits back then was that swim suits had to cover everything if you were a woman, men however were not allowed to take off their shirts until 1993. The bathing suits for women were like dresses and stockings. The 1920s also had some gender roles which caused companies grew larger and wages increased and new things were able to be bought. Many people are in the debate whether companies use persuasion or manipulation in their advertisements to get people to buy a certain product. In the Innocent ones advertisement the â€Å"Stop the Abuse† organization shows a picture of a sad, abused little boy. The advertisement only shows half of his face, but the color in his face has been lightened so it has a gray tint. To the right, where the other half of his face should be, there is a stop sign. The stop sign is bright red, and below the stop sign are big bolded words that read, â€Å"I am Not a punching bag.† The word â€Å"not† is underlined to bring the significance of the advertisement to end child abuse.
